SMART VENUES

&experiences

the coliseum

The iconic Coliseum stadium in downtown Los Angeles has been renovated and retrofitted with Responsive Reconfiguration Technology, a new multi-story, multi-functional seating section has been added, and a semi-detached ringed causeway encircles the Coliseum at the highest point of the new seating section. The vertical seating wing not only adds thousands of additional seats, but also accepts RRT vehicles that are licensed to dock as plug-in seating pods. Heliotropic programming enables the wing to rotate around the upper perimeter of the stadium in response to the location of the sun, providing shade for spectators and athletes. The wing also features exterior-facing seating, which, when positioned accordingly, overlooks the neighboring Terrain Racing Arena to allow for convenient multi-venue viewing. The ringed causeway offers a spectacular viewing platform over the stadium below and across the city of Los Angeles, while the interior of the ring features display screens, and is equipped on all sides to provide area lighting, as well as light shows and launch pads for fireworks displays.

Terrain Racing Arena

The Terrain Racing Arena (located to the right of the Coliseum in the top-left image) serves sports requiring varied and off-road-style courses. One of the new sports added to the International Summer Games for 2060, Any-Terrain Racing, was the inspiration. Responsive Reconfiguration Technology enables the course to constantly morph and evolve in, around, and above spectator seating areas. Other sports housed here will include BMX and Mountain Biking, the first time live spectator ticketing and viewing has been offered for Mountain Biking.

RRT vehicle-venue integration

Some venues are designed to accept RRT vehicle pods that have license to deviate from the mag-lev transportation system. These pods dock with the venue in pre-assigned bays and reconfigure to offer a private and seamless event arrival, viewing, and departure experience.

For those with impaired hearing

Surround-sound headsets and hearing aids alike are able to sync with the ambient action microphone network. For those who are fully deaf, the “visi” sensory slate offers a split panel screen with simple visual cues indicating play action events on one side, and text on the other side to convey announcements, speeches, national anthems, etc. As an optional setting, music, such as national anthems or opening/closing ceremony soundtracks, can be conveyed graphically.

For those with impaired vision

Surround-sound headsets may be synced with a live-feed from a network of ambient action microphones that track with the progress of the competition or event. Sensory slates are also available to be synced with each event; the “tactile” sensory slate offers vision-impaired attendees the opportunity to follow the activity with their sense of touch. Athletes are represented by raised shapes, equipment is represented by shapes in relief. Play action events, such as scoring, crossing of the finish line, penalties, etc. are denoted by a variety of vibrations.

For those with impaired mobility

Venues are well-equipped with swift elevators and escalators, alongside stairs in major corridors and access routes. Minor gradients and access to stadium seating is ramped. Any seat is programmed to respond to the arrival of a personal mobility device and will reconfigure to accommodate.

Responsive Reconfiguration

Sensors within the framework can be programmed to respond to traffic and capacity, or can be managed manually. The system can also be managed differently for different areas; for example, viewing/seating areas may be set at a certain capacity to maintain ticket values, while entrances, exits, and other high traffic spaces can be enabled to respond to accommodate increased numbers of people to help with crowd management, preventing bottlenecks and eliminating the danger of trampling incidents in emergency situations.

smart Structure

Venues consist of a carbon fiber diagrid framework that forms the skeletal structure of the building. This framework allows capacity flexibility while remaining inherently strong and durable. Exterior facades and interior walls, ceilings, and flooring are formed by ETFE-3000 membranes that have been developed in conjunction with studies of the vocal sacs of frogs. Mimicking the inherent ability of the frog’s throat to stretch and expand to over three times the size of its own head, then return to its original state time and again without losing elasticity or perishing.

athletes' village

The Athlete's Village consists of a complex of smart pods embedded within the vertical diagrid at the vibrant 10/110 interchange. Integrated into the mag-lev structure, athletes enjoy seamless access to dedicated RRT vehicles to attend training sessions and competitions. The village also overlays greenway space, affording athletes and their support teams easy access to nature. Following the Games, these accommodations will be made available to Angelenos as affordable housing, with segments also assigned to sober living and the homeless.
